From Purcell to Punk, or the English manner
This exhibition within the framework of the Bridging Europe Festival offers a glimpse into eight centuries of British music history. Ancient and contemporary manuscripts, paintings, sheet music and photographs provide us with a comprehensive outline of the fantastically rich traditions of the British Isles, from the earliest polyphonic sources to West End musicals. Britain has not only given the world great composers but also superb performers and long-established musical institutions that are still active today. The exhibition recalls the most significant chapters of British music history without genre boundaries, featuring Renaissance masters, including the honorary Englishman Handel, Gilbert and Sullivan, the kings of English 19th century comic opera, and a pivotal composer of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten. Visitors will also „encounter” the most important popular music bands and figures of the last half-century, from the Beatles to Adele. The captions and explanatory notes were written by the curator of the exhibition, musicologist Gergely Fazekas.
